The City of Aiken is getting some national exposure through a show that hits airwaves across the country.
The City is featured on “Today in America,” which is aired on a variety of news networks in both the United States and Canada. The show focuses on the stories of people and businesses in communities around the United States. It’s hosted by former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Terry Bradshaw.
Aiken is described in the show as “an American gem” with “rich history” and wonderful hospitality. Several familiar local faces are in the segment, including Aiken native Judith Burgess, City Mayor Fred Cavanaugh, City Councilwoman and URS employee Lessie Price and Economic Development Partnership Director Will Williams.
“I think it’s a great opportunity for Aiken to get some publicity and for us to showcase our city,” Cavanaugh said. “I hope maybe some folks will see (the segment) and come visit us.”
Filming started in late May and it took several months to put the segment together. Those involved seem pleased with the final product. A lot of information was packed into the piece which is close to five minutes long. The equestrian community, Aiken’s history, key social events, local businesses and institutions and the different city parks were all mentioned.
URS and the Economic Development Partnership funded the segment. Williams said this was a great chance to really promote Aiken and everything it has to offer.
“It really does enhance the marketing for the City,” Williams said. “This will enhance our efforts in economic development by having people in other parts of the country see our short segment. I’m glad we had the opportunity to do this.”
Williams said that they were able to choose markets for the segment to appear in. For example, it was shown in the Charlotte area shortly after Thanksgiving.
“It is wonderful to have the opportunity to share the very positive aspects about Aiken with folks who need to spend time here,” said City Manager Richard Pearce.
Price said that URS was eager to get involved after hearing of the opportunity to showcase Aiken in a positive way, especially in regards to economic development with the focus on a community that thrives on partnerships. With so many coming into Aiken from around the country and even the world, whether it’s for business or to visit family or friends, Price said this segment helps build the case even more so that this is a great community to live in.
